Product Review: Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Curl Custard

You know there are those products that you just want to work, regardless of whether or not they’ve lived up to the standard. But no matter what you do, they just fall your hand, eh ehn, Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Curl Custard has just been that to me. I wonder how the packaging of something could be so good and yet so sub par. Mstw. See the name sef, so nice but I’m not here to rant. I took the chance with this product just to see whether or not its claims would work for my 4C hair.

Aunt Jackies curl la la defining custard

Full name: Aunt Jackie’s Curls & Coils Curl La La Defining Curl Custard

Product details:

Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La Defining Curl Custard is Sulfate-free, Paraben-free, has no mineral oil and no petrolatum.

For natural curls, coils and waves. Enriched with shea butter and olive oil. Say GOODBYE to frizz, unruly curls and lifeless coils. Define, shape and control curls, waves, coils and braid-outs, while adding moisture, shine and natural conditioning.

Directions: Apply generously to wet or dry hair. Gently massage into scalp and work through hair from roots to ends {PAUSE. There’s NO way I’m massaging any product INTO my SCALP. Unless it’s an OIL so fail}. Style as desired. For light scrunchy curls or coils, blow dry on a light setting with a diffuser. For elongated, stretchy, bouncy curls or waves, apply and then finger style hair into place while blow drying on a light setting or allow hair to dry (LOOOL. I think the people at Aunt Jackie’s should have attached a blow dryer to this product :D)

First Few Ingredients: Water, Propylene Glycol, PPG-1 Trideceth-6, Shea Butter, Soybean Oil, Glycerin, Olive Oil, Polyquaternium-37, etc… (Honestly, I think I bought this product with either my eyes closed or with too much money in the pocket, LOOOL, it’s all good!)

My thoughts:

i. The product is light purple with the consistency of a custard (if you can make it properly without lumps… :D), the smell kinda lingers. I don’t hate the smell but if you’re not comfortable with it at first, it could grow on you. You could like the texture if you dig lilac gels…

ii. I’ve used this product in the past and it just hasn’t done any of what it promises. I used it during different weathers just to see whether or not it had anything to do with it but I didn’t get no defined coils or braid-outs. Heck, I got better twist-outs using just my leave-in. Yup. I tried 3 strand twist-outs with this product: I just got dull-looking hair and you know I’m one to rock my hair however it turns out but mehn I just had to keep it covered up.

iii. I think it works well as a detangler of some sorts. It has enough slip to help out in that area.

iv. I’m also thinking, I know just the person to gift this to. I’ll probably give it to someone with a slightly different hair texture than me and hope it works well for them.
