Steps for healthy hair care

Beginning of hair journey 2010 Brastrap today
Comparing my hair length from June 2009 to October 2012

I decided to start taking better care of my hair sometime in 2009 but I actually started taking active steps in January 2010. The steps that I believe are so important for healthy hair care (whether your hair is relaxed or natural) are as follows:

  1. Condition your hair before washing it (Pre-shampoo conditioning or sometimes abbreviated as Pre-poo)
  2. Wash
  3. Deep Condition
  4. Moisturize and seal your hair as often as necessary

I shall talk more about these steps in future posts. Take care and God bless you!

      1. excuse drfomsky i new here um my hair is like seriously slow in gowth i donno if its cause i cut my three times and what can i do?

        1. Dear Anita. I advise that you follow the listed steps for healthy hair care consistently and exercise a little patience. You will see results. I also advise you keep a hair diary and take pictures of your hair at different intervals to monitor your progress. Thank you

    1. Growing long and full hair is both about technique and products. To grow long hair, you need to reduce breakage to the minimum. You can do this by keeping your hair healthy and deep conditioning your hair at least once in two weeks.
Secondly, you should protect your hair by keeping it off your shoulders.
Thirdly, you need to comb your hair the right way: start from the tips and work your way up gradually till you get to the roots.
As for products, I recommend Jamaican black castor oil for thicker hair.

  2. i wanna re-grow my hair, so I had my hair cut VERY low, Jan, 2014. lol……..
Now its taking time to grow, can’t even observe the stages of growth.
How do i enhance my hair growth.

    1. You might be able to enhance your hair growth by using a hair growth supplement like GNC ultra nourish hair OR Hairfinity. You can also try accelerating growth by applying a hair growth oil e.g Hair a Trigger Growth Elixir, Liquid Hold Hair Growth Oil, OR Jamaican black castor oil. Check out our store at for these and more products.

  3. I used to have a long and full hair but the whole hair has so thinned out especially the front! It’s giving me concern. I really need help!

    1. Hi Koko. Thank you for your comment. What is your current hair routine? Do you flat iron or blow dry your hair regularly? How often do you steam or condition your hair? I advise that if possible, you should deep condition your hair at least once a week. Air dry or roller set your hair. Use a hair growth oil e.g Jamaican Black Castor Oil or Liquid gold hair growth oil. For the front, you can also apply these oils I mentioned. Plus avoid tight hair styles. Don’t fix your hair back to back. Give it space to breathe if possible. Thanks.

    1. To deep condition your hair, you should first cleanse your hair with your favourite shampoo. Next, apply a deep conditioner to your hair from roots to tips. Then cover your hair with a shower cap. Leave it in your hair for at least 20 minutes. If you have a hair dryer or steamer, you can also sit underneath one. (or go to a salon to get this done). When the time is up, rinse off the conditioner with lukewarm or cool water.
If you don’t access to Jamaican black castor oil, you can simply use regular castor oil sold in pharmacies. Thanks.

  4. Hi doc, I wana start growing my hair again, so I cut it low. What growing tips would you recommend? And which deep conditioner would you recommend?

    1. I’ll recommend to you techniques I personally use. I always enhance my conditioners with essential oils. They are well known for stimulating hair growth. Secondly, deep condition your hair regularly. This will keep your hair well moisturised and reduce breakage. Thirdly, as your hair grows longer, form the habit of doing things in sections. For example, section your hair before combing it. This helps you handle each section easily. Moisturize your hair in sections. This also prevents you from neglecting some sections. Fourthly, as your hair grows longer, start combing from the tips first before you comb the roots.
if your hair is natural, I’ll recommend Cantu naturals deep conditioning masque. But if it’s relaxed, I recommend any of the following: John Frieda conditioner, Joico moisture recovery conditioner or Nexxus Humectress masque. Sizzelle Nigeria online store – Deep conditioners

  5. Pls I need your help, I decided to go natural and I’ve not relaxed my hair since April. I want to grow my hair full and long with full edges before I cut the relaxed weak tips of my hair. Pls what products do u think I should start with like what pre-poo conditioner, shampoo, deep coditioner ,oils can I buy at first…and please what can I use to stop dandruff and itchy scalp…pls reply…thank u.

  6. i have an itchy scalp and It’s filled with dandruff, so it stopped growing.. pls wat can I do 2 prevent d dandruff n make it grow longer

    1. I don’t think that dandruff can stop the hair from growing. However, it can be a nuisance. To tackle dandruff, I recommend that you use an anti-dandruff shampoo at least once a week, reduce application of oil on your scalp and use specific dandruff treatment. Adding tea tree oil to your shampoo and conditioner can also help alleviate symptoms.

  7. i have a nature hair and i want to relax it pls i want to find out if it will stop it from long and i also want to know the best relaxer to use which wont break or stop the growth…

    1. Relaxing your hair won’t make it to stop growing but it means you have to pay special attention as relaxed hair is more fragile than natural hair. I recommend ORS olive oil relaxer because it doesn’t overprocess the hair

  8. Help! My hair hardly relaxes except I use UB relaxer. I’m told that this relaxer causes my hair to thin-out and break. The hair always has weak-ends. I also have dandruff and an itchy scalp.I admire those with long and full hair and would like my hair to become like theirs. Pls what do u recommend, i.e. relaxers and all?Would appreciate ur response. Thanks

    1. I have never used the UB relaxer and I don’t know anyone who has. If you think that the relaxer is causing you issues, I advise that you change to another one which is better in quality e.g ORS Olive oil relaxer. Relaxers on their own have an inherent ability to damage hair. Please read this post about using relaxers ‘safely’.
For your itchy scalp, I recommend that you add tea tree oil to your shampoos and/or use anti-dandruff shampoos. For longer hair, it takes patience and dedication. You need to reduce the rate of your hair breakage: Firstly, deep condition your hair once every week or once every two weeks. Secondly, moisturize your hair during the week. These help to prevent the hair from drying out and breaking. Please follow our blog for more tips. Thanks!

  9. pls, my hair gives me concern. been battling with no hair growth especially at the front and edges. Could it be baldness or what. It’s difficult to leave the hair opened, always fix weavon ‘ cos It’s nt good to be looked on at all. Pls what could be the possible remedy..tnx

    1. Is your hair relaxed now? If it is relaxed and you want to stop using relaxers, you need to decide if you want to cut of all your relaxed hair now or wait a little bit for your natural hair to grow little and then cut it. Taking care of your natural hair basically involves following healthy hair practices which I have enumerated above. 10. am new here and i really admire your hair. i have a dark and full hair but is not growing. and also my daughter has a full hair but she does not have front hair and i need products i can use to make it grow well, shes 3years and her hair is still natural …..

    1. Hi Faith. Thanks for your comment. I apologise for not responding earlier. I think I was enjoying the holiday season too much 🙂
I’m pretty sure your hair is growing but the problem is that it is breaking at the same rate at which it is growing. What sort of conditioners do you use? Is your hair relaxed or natural?
For your daughter, I recommend that she uses Jamaican black castor oil. If she were older than 6 years, I would recommend that you add some essential oils for her hair line.

  11. I used to have full natural that was also long. When I relaxed it was longer i use dark and lovely. But recently it just cut off. I’m really discouraged and i’m thinking of leaving it to lie fallow. Please advise me on how to make it better. And could you explain deep conditioning

    1. I can understand your frustration. My advice to you is to be patient and read a bit about healthy hair care. First of all, I advise that you deep condition your hair every time you wash it. Deep conditioning is basically what we used to call steaming back in the day. You apply a thick conditioner to your hair after washing it and leave it on for at least 20 minutes before rinsing it out. It helps to restore moisture to your hair. 13. Hi.. my hair has always given me concern,am over 20years and my hair has never grown more than an inch, its very soft like a baby’s own, always shedding,I can’t even make it or open it. Have tried everything I know but I keep getting more frustrated..don’t know what to do anymore.

    1. Hi Cristina. You didn’t mention relaxers so I believe it’s natural. Your hair is too soft for them. The first thing we need to do is to ascertain if your hair is growing or not. Take a little section at the back and dye it with a visible colour like auburn (using a permanent dye). If you can see black roots after a while, then it means it is growing out of the scalp. You then know that you need to focus on retaining your length. Use only your fingers to detangle your hair. No combs. What conditioners do you use now? Opt for strengthening conditioners after shampooing e.g ORS replenishing conditioner. Add Use a strengthening leave-in conditioner e.g Cantu Shea butter leave in. Apply a hair moisturizer daily to minimize breakage. Take hair supplements.

  14. Hello, I really admire your care and knowledge of the hair. Weldon. My issue is that the hair at the back of my head is not growing at all and believe me, it really isn’t. I’ve waited for so long but it has just refused to grow. My hair is relaxed and I need your advise on this.

  15. Hello, please I want to go natural but my fear is I have a soft scap which makes combing difficult for me, can you please recommend what I can use to make my hair soft and also have I need to have a healthy natural hair. Thanks

Please leave a comment: it will really make my day!
