Scalp dryness: causes and remedies

Hello best friends! I feel like we are at that point in our relationship. So welcome back to the blog! I hope you are good. We’ll be talking about scalp dryness. It is a problem that actually affects a lot of us >_<. In this post, I have tried to cover its causes and some solutions.


  • Dehydration – when you drink a lot of water, your body circulates it to your vital organs and whatever remains goes to the rest of your body including your scalp. So when you don’t drink enough water, your scalp might not get any. Hydration can be a hassle with all the peeing (I just want to put it out there) but you get enough moisture which is good for your skin and scalp. So if you are drinking enough water, you’re hydrated from the inside out. Eating healthy is also good.
  • Build up of dirt and product residue can lead to dryness, itching and other scalp problems and as such the scalp should be cleaned regularly in order to remove the build up and moisturize the scalp.
  • Another cause of dry scalp could be insufficient sebum production. So oiling the scalp with oil (jojoba oil, coconut oil, olive oil etc.) would help supplement for the insufficient hair loss.
  • Products that are not compatible with your hair can cause dryness. Try out new products depending on how they feel on your hair and don’t be afraid to change something that doesn’t feel so good.

However, oiling the scalp does not moisturize the scalp but seals in the moisture. I try to oil my scalp at least once in two weeks and I keep it clean as often as I can. During the periods where I neglect my hair I have to work extra hard to fight the dryness. What are your thoughts on oiling your scalp? How else do you deal with scalp dryness?
