Ebunite’s Experience with Nubian Roots Rhassoul Clay

Everyone knows I’m a Bentonite clay stan. For some reasons, I avoided buying Rhassoul Clay as I was simply content with Bentonite. But of course, my curiosity got the better part of me so I decided to order a pack of Rhassoul clay from Olori. Can I just say that this is probably the worst product decision I’ve made in recent times?

According to Nubian Roots,

Rhassoul Clay is extracted in a remote desert region of Morocco. This naturally absorbent clay with its forming effect cleanses deeply and softens skin and hair.

How To Use

Face: Add a little water to a tablespoon of clay, mix and apply. Leave to dry for 5 – 10 mins. Rinse.

Hair: Mix water and enough clay to cover hair, massage and leave for 15-20 mins. Rinse thoroughly.

My Experience

Of course, when I saw all of this, I believed the entire process would be a cakewalk. After all, I’ve been using clays and powders for almost two years now. So, I got to work. I took down my loose twists and gathered all my supplies. Opened the tiny pack of clay and began measuring bearing in mind that clays have the tendency to swell. So, I took it one tablespoon at a time. After mixing about two and a half with water – I wanted to be on the safe side – I didn’t notice anything. No swell, no change of texture. Nothing. Can I just mention that rhassoul clay looked like CEREAL and smelt OFF. I understand the addition of wheat germ oil but it still didn’t sit well with me. Something was definitely amiss. But I continued mixing. Before I knew it, I was almost done with the entire pack. SUPER WEIRD especially since it was supposed to swell. I wasn’t meant to use that much but it didn’t swell but kept looking like baby food. I didn’t try to add too many additives as I wanted to be on the safe side. A few teaspoons of oils and honey and I applied the gooey mixture on my hair. After about an hour, I began to rinse out. OMG! PARTICLES UPON PARTICLES! This is definitely NOT rhassoul clay. I even went back to cross check on the various sites I visited. So, I reached out to their twitter handle to table my complaint. No reply till today. Says a lot about the brand to be honest.  I was horrified. I rinsed out with conditioner several times to get out most of the particles. Of course, not everything went out. Plus my hair was dry and annoying. I just deep conditioned with African Naturalistas Hair Mayonnaise. I was so upset!

Did I just buy and use fake rhassoul clay or what?
