Naturals in the City 18 – Recap

Last Saturday, the eighteenth edition of Naturals in the City (NITC) took place at Cafe Neo | Cre8 in Victoria Island, Lagos. The quarterly healthy lifestyle event is organized by Natural Nigerian, The Kink and I, Ms. Isioma, and Carib Health, Ltd. The theme for this edition was ‘Wholesome Living’. There were speakers, vendors, food, and generally a good time.

Unfortunately, I missed the start of the talks. The Glam Catalogue provided tutorials on proper eyebrow techniques and cut crease eyeshadow application.

Next up was Itua (Naija Vegan Chef) providing several natural alternatives for cleaning and personal hygiene products. One of her favorite items to use for cleaning is vinegar. It is an acidic solution and helps to kill germs just as well as some packaged products.

Sabirah was the next speaker. During her interactive session, she shared her journey to establishing a relationship with food. She also shared tips on how we can have a better relationship with food.

One tip that stuck out to me was, “honor your hunger”. It basically means acknowledging when you are hungry and providing your body the best that you can. I normally ignore when I’m hungry, especially when I am busy with something. Hours will pass and then I realize I haven’t eaten. 😯 It’s time to change things.

The last speaker was Kelechi (Yellow Sisi). She shared tons of natural hair hacks to help us get healthy heads of hair. My favorite tip was to learn at least 2 hairstyles just in case you don’t have access to a stylist.

If you want to read more from each speaker, you can read some of the tweets at the NITCNigeria account.

In an effort to help promote the businesses, several vendors were given a chance to share a bit about their businesses. I enjoy when I get a chance to support Nigerian brands. The industry has really grown over the years and I’m excited to see how it will continue. I ended up buying some oils from Beautifully Nappy.

The event was well attended and the crowd was quite diverse. Men, women, boys, girls and babies were all in attendance. I really appreciate how this event has evolved from a Natural hair meet-up to a Lifestyle meet-up. It makes it more inclusive and relevant to our current society.

The next event is in June. Hopefully, you can make it.
