How Do You Manage Your Natural Hair In Your Workplace?

Two Sundays ago, I had a conversation with an usher in my church. In fact, a couple of months ago, she had approached me first and asked about my hair.

You know as Naturalistas, there’s a kindred spirit that binds us together. The first thing that struck me was her beautifully styled natural hair under a fascinator (headpiece). As usual I was curious enough to strike a conversation. The first thing I did was compliment her hair and ask where she got it styled.

I blurted out the first salon that came to mind and she confirmed it. In fact, we said it in unison. So, we got chatting until she mentioned that, ”natural hair is not allowed in her office”. I was gobsmacked. Of course I had heard that natural hair is a controversial issue and is not even allowed in some offices but I never really had a first hand account.

This took me by surprise because her hair was so gorgeous. She had to go the extra mile of styling her hair in a salon rather than by herself just so that it would be approved.

I don’t even know what to think.

So, ladies how do you cope with your natural hair in your offices?

  1. Hey!

I’m so offended by that whole “natural hair is not allowed” sentiment from that lady’s office. But I know that, sadly, this is the reality in some work places in the US, for example. I didn’t think it would be the same case here in Nigeria, though, because the work environment here (i.e. the way people dress and how colleagues interact with one another) tends to be so much more layed-back (at least from my experience).

    Crazy stuff!
