The other day, someone said that she doesn’t think about clays – Bentonite, Rhassoul – as more than cleansers. I obviously did not agree with that. So, I told her that they are so much more than that. I thought the situation was coincidental as I had just exhausted my first pack of Bentonite Clay and opened a new one.
Clays are the next best thing to happen to my natural hair after henna. They are so versatile and can be used from head to toe. When mixed appropriately, it can save you a lot of time on wash days. Which is why I’ve decided to show you how to turn your clay mixtures to masques such that it incorporates the ingredients that would cater to every aspect of your wash day. From detangling to cleansing and deep conditioning.
Last wash day, I decided on a whim that I wanted to install a protective style as my hair has been in twists for about six months. So, I needed to prep my hair for extensions. The first thing that came to my mind was a Bentonite Clay masque. But first, I needed to choose my ingredients carefully.
This is what it looked like.
- 6 tsp of Bentonite Clay
- 2 tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar
- 4 tsp of Aloe Vera Gel
- 4 tsp of Palm Kernel Oil
- 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil
- In a plastic bowl, mix Bentonite Clay with Apple Cider Vinegar until it swells. You don’t need too much, just enough to activate the clay.
- Next, mix the clay with fresh aloe vera gel. This would have a creamy consistency.
- Next, add your oils and some water to balance it. So it’s not too thick or runny.
- Apply as desired.
Usually for me, when using Bentonite Clay after adding the ACV, I could go ahead and use it like that.
This is probably what the lady thought about clays as shampoos. But because of the intensity of Bentonite which is a cleanser and detoxifier, I stepped it up a notch to make a complete masque. The addition of moisturizing ingredients like Aloe Vera Gel and Palm Kernel Oil balanced it up. So, instead of having a cleanser and detangler which would have left my hair craving moisture, I stepped it up. The results? Cleansed, detangled and moisturized hair. I did not need to deep condition but I did anyway because of my protective style.
So, ladies don’t shortchange yourself. Get the most out of your clays. It would save you a lot of time on wash days.© Copyright 2016 Ebun Oluwole, All rights Reserved. Written For: Get your Sizzelle on!
